JONES BACK FOR 2004 AND HUNGRY FOR ANOTHER TOP 10

Robert Jones is hungry for another top-10 result at this weekend’s Round Three of the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series.

Fresh from a recent test day at Winton, the team’s home track, Jones explained why he is filled with confidence that his distinctive #69 Spies Hecker VX Commodore will again feature at the pointy end of the field as it has done at Winton for the previous two seasons, “We put in a very solid test day of 100 laps and found some definite improvements in the car. Despite hitting the track for the first time in 2004 we slashed one and a half seconds from my quickest lap time of last year and this was on old tyres left over from last season.

“My lap times were pleasing because I literally had not sat in the car since Bathurst (the Bob Jane T-marts Bathurst 1000) last year” but Jones is remaining sober about the challenge this weekend, “Even though we have found more pace, and will no doubt find more when we use brand new tyres this weekend, the standard of competition has risen too.”

Jones was forced to miss the first two Rounds of 2004 due to work commitments of his highly-successful sign writing business which included substantial work on the AVESCO B-double transporter, “This lay off puts us out of championship contention but my passion for wringing the best from the remaining Rounds is unabated, I’ll be having a ‘red hot go’ this weekend. Winton is a happy hunting ground for us, we debuted this car there two years and scored top-ten results for the Round in both years. Another objective is to bring the car home unscathed, this track always has the highest carnage rates and plenty of teams have spent a lot of repair money.

Winton bills itself as the “nation’s action track”, packing twelve corners into its three kilometres length it is predominately comprised of tight corners plus a fast main straight. Renowned for close hard racing Winton always serves up more than its fair share of panel-rubbing and off-track excursions.
